3 out of 5 stars Ok   March 4, 2010
Ashley Ja'teya Smith (SC)
I read this book in two days. Sad to say I skipped a couple of parts that were just too boring!!! Anyways I like some one you wanted Winter and Midnight to get together. I kind of figured they wouldn't just from the way Midnight treated her. To a certain extent he liked her, just not the way she liked him. And I do get why he didn't want to get with her. She was kind of dumb when it came down to life. There are just some things you go to think through before doing it. Like for her 18th birthday when she took her moms car and picked up her friends and they went to the hotel. I knew what the outcome of that was going to be. The videotape could have been avoided had she thought the whole thing through. I also think if her family had of stayed put and not moved to the mansion the cops would not have got to them that soon.

For the life of me I don't see how Winter could not see why Midnight didn't like her. She kept making stupid mistakes over and over again. Midnight on the other hand played it smart. Unlike those other fools he didn't give the authorities any reason to suspect him. He kept it simple. He only had a mattress and candles in his apartment. That was it!! And the money he made he saved it up because he knew that lifestyle would not last forever. Sooner or later(always ends up being sooner) it was going to hit the fan. So yeah I understand why he never showed any interest in Winter. He didn't need an ignorant woman bringing him down when he was already there.

The ending is what I didn't like. Bullet was straight up playing homegirl and she was cool with it!! Just as long as he got her whatever she wanted she was happy. The part where he had the dogs in the apartment and she couldn't come out the bedroom had me laughing at her pathetic behind!!! Homegirl could have gone to college and probably become a fashion designer or beautician, but that was too much work for her. She wanted money right then and there. The apartment was in her name and the rental car was in her name. Bullet was smart. For someone who prided themselves on being smart, she was mighty dumb to not see what Bullet was pulling over her.

I had heard so much about this book that I had to finally read it...I liked it so much I ended up reading it twice. This is a must read. Anyone who grew up in the inner city can relate to some part of this book. I highly recommend this book.

This book is a must read. I don't know why it took me this long to actually read it. I love a story that can make me feel good, laugh, cry and feel sad all through out. Winter is like so many other girls I know of. This book was well written and it kept me glued to it from front to back. I read it in one day! I would not take my face out this book for more than 10 minutes lol Read this book, you won't be disappointed. This is a book for all ages and everyone should definitely put thought to this. This is not a meaningless book, it has a valuable lesson in it. I just wish there was a part 2 or a longer ending...I wanted to see Winter in her new state of mind. However, thats just a personal reason of mine..Sister Souljah did this book wonderfully!

4 out of 5 stars Hopefully Living equals Learning   January 29, 2010

The Regal Sisterhood Book Club selected "The Coldest Winter Ever" for its inaugural book of the month in Oct 2005. We found a way to relate to this novel by reflecting on our own lives the experiences we have encountered. It also gave us the opportunity to be thankful for having a moral upbringing that probably kept us out of a lot of the situations "Winter Santiaga" found herself in. As a group, we agreed that she lacked the conscious that a Christian foundation would have given her. She grew up fast much like a lot of women in the world today. This was an awesome, entertaining read.
