Despite the number of guests on hand, Dr. Dre's decade-/century-/millennium-ending sequel to The Chronic is, like its predecessor, less a stack of posse cuts and more an elegantly seamless work from West Coast hip-hop's premier auteur. Deliberately cinematic in everything from its mix of moods to dramatic musical surges, 2001 is Dre's assessment of the gangsta life in medium shots. No longer fully immersed in violence and random sex, yet aware of their attraction, he often lets his guests blow steam about whatever's on their minds. When he takes stock of gangbanging circa late '99, though, he drops his neutral tone; he even provides another half-joking but stern warning to protege Eminem on "What's the Difference." Between his discovery of Slim Shady, visits from old pal Snoop Dogg, and, most of all, the masterful sound and flow of this CD, Dre should shut down all talk of his supposed irrelevance. --Rickey Wright

The Doc bang's out all the hits on this one. I especially love track #3 featuring Devin the Dude. I fell in love with Devin's laid back flow after he sang the hook and rapped one verse of this track. I'm sure many of you became Dude fans too after hearing his smooth flows. Highly recommend you check out Devin the Dude's "Smoke Sessions Volume 1".

This PROVES Westcoast rap is the best style ever. Haha at least to me! After long anticipation, this dropped and killed ALL competition. I loved all collaborators on here boasting Snoop Dogg, Kurupt, Xzibit, Eminem, Nate Dogg, and wow...so many others. Loved every minute of it and CRAZY production!
True West Coast classic. Long az hell album, but it goes by quik listenin' 2 it!
The West was back with this one and NOBODY could touch it! Introducing the new style of G-Funk, dominating for years and years after.

After nearly a decade-long wait, fans of West-Coast hip-hop were finally satisfied in late 1999 when Dr. Dre released Chronic 2001, the smash sequel to The Chronic (1992). Dre includes so many guests on the album that many critics were quick to write this album off as a shoddy collaboration. How wrong they were! With a guest lineup including Hitman, Kurupt, Eminem, Xzibit, and Snoop Dogg (among several others), Dre ensures that any song he creates on the album is premier.
Some of the best songs on the track are "Xxplosive," with Nate Dogg, "The Next Episode," with Snoop Dogg, and "The Message," featuring stunning vocals by Mary J. Blige. Even the skit tracks are entertaining and help create a seamless flow when listening to the entire album from beginning to end. "Pause for Porno" is probably the goofiest skit, featuring Jake Steed in a menoge` trois with two girls. The funniest, without a doubt is "Ed-Ucation," featuring Eddie Griffith lecturing on the "biggest hoes on planet Earth."
As far as the content, Dre touches on a variety of subjects familiar to listeners of his earlier albums and listeners of West Coast hip-hop in general. On "Forgot About Dre," featuring Eminem (whom Dre discovered and created), Dre lashes out at those who have bashed him during the `90s and stands his ground as the premier "Doctor" of hip-hop. "Murder Ink" is a dark track about the gangster assasins of Los Angeles. "The Message" is a spiritual track in which Dre mourns and remembers his late brother.
Dre proves yet again why he is the uncontested "Doctor" of West-Coast hip-hop, with a disc full of quality tracks, blazin' beats and an all-star guest cast. There are virtually no filler tracks on the album, and it is a great listen as both primary entertainment or background accompanyment. Hip-hop fans who don't have this disc in their collections are missing out!

if you like dr dre, X-Z, and eminem youll want this CD, really good there isnt one disapointing song on here
